Directors Across Borders 8th regional co-production forum – summary

 

The 8th Directors Across Borders (DAB) Regional Co-Production Forum was held within the framework of the 11th GOLDEN APRICOT Yerevan International Film Festival on 15-17 July, 2014 at Ani Plaza Hotel.

The DAB Co-Production Forum is a key annual industry event in the region aimed at promoting talents and film production/co-production in the Eastern Partnership countries; providing a networking platform for regional filmmakers, cinema support organizations and industry experts from around the world; improving the capacities of emerging filmmakers; and launching promising film projects through seed grants.

The call for applications for the 8th DAB Forum was announced on 16 of April, 2014 and the deadline for entries was 30 May, 2014. 14 projects from the EaP countries (among 24 submitted) were selected to participate in the Forum.

The team of trainers included: the French delegate to the European Co-production Fund, Eurimages and Head of the International Co-production department of the CNC, Mr. Julien Ezanno, representative of the Eastern Europe German Films, Head Producer Documentaries at Saxonia Entertainment, Ms. Simone Bauman and President of ARTVIVA and Head of Film TEEP, Ms. Ruxandra Cernat.

The International Jury of the workshop was composed of the Artistic Director of the Tbilisi International Film Festival, Ms. Nino Anjaparidze, producer from Romania, Mr. Dan Burlack, the President of ARTVIVA and Head of Film TEEP, Ms. Ruxandra Cernat, programmer of the Rotterdam International Film Festival, Mr. Evgeniy Gusyatinskiy, the Artistic Director of the GOLDEN APRICOT Yerevan International Film Festival, Ms. Susanna Harutyunyan, producer from Germany, Ms. Christine Haupt, Head of Belgrade Industry Meetings B2B and Chief Producerof ART & POPCORN MOTION PICTURE COMPANY, Mr. Miroslav Mogorović and producer from Armenia, as well as International Adviser of the Directors Across Project, Mr. Jeff Kalousdian.

Representatives of selected projects from the Eastern Partnership (EaP) countries, jurors, trainers and guests all gathered at  Ani Plaza hotel’s Dvin hall and were welcomed by the Golden Apricot Yerevan International Film Festival General Director and the DAB project Director Harutyun Khachatryan, the Golden Apricot Yerevan International Film Festival Artistic Director and the DAB project Manager Susanna Harutyunyan, the Project Manager of the European Commission, Irina Movsesyan and Head of the National Cinema Center of Armenia Gevorg Gevorgyan.

The Forum began with an interesting presentation by Kirsten Niehuus on Medienboard Brandenburg co-production strategy with EaP region, than Simone Baumann gave some advices on how to co-produce with Germany.

Mr. Julien Ezanno from International co-productions, Centre National du Cinema et de l’Image Animée (CNC) explained How to co-produce with France. 

A panel discussion on the obstacles and experiences in the co-production between the EU and the Eastern Partnership Countries took place with the renowned representatives of the film industry Julien Ezanno, Susanna Harutyunyan, Gevorg Gevorgyan, Christine Haupt, Alice Ormiere, Nino Anjaparidze, Vladimer Katcharava, Gorune Aprikian and Hasmik Hovhannisyan.

Afterwards Ms. Ruxandra Cernat made a little training entitled “Pitching blessing or curse?”

The second day of the forum was dedicated to the pitchings. On the last day of the Forum one-to-one meetings between participants and jurors and renowned industry representatives took place at Ani Plaza Hotel.

The 8th Directors Across Borders Regional Co-Production Forum's grant awards ceremony was organized at Ani Plaza Hotel’s Ani Hall.

“Siren's Call” by Ramin Matin and Emine Yildirim was awarded with the prize of 3,000 Euro for the best potential international co-production, another prize of 3,000 Euro for the best addressing the issue of tolerance  went to Nika Shek, Sarik Hovsepyan, Shushan Kocharyan and Eldar Albertson for their project “Long Gardens”.  One more prize of 3,000 Euro for the best potential regional co-production was presented to a project “Jivani-74” by Diana Mkrtchyan and Aram Khatchatrian and the last prize of 3000 Euros for the best story went to “Neighbors” by Grigol Abashidze and Joseph Bliadze.

DAB Regional Co-Production Forum is part of the DAB project that is funded by the European Union through the Eastern Partnership Culture Programme and implemented by the GOLDEN APRICOT Fund for Cinema Development in Armenia and its partners: INTERNEWS (Ukraine), Cinema Art Centre Prometheus (Georgia), and Media Initiatives Center (Armenia).
